Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are planning to allow mutual travel for citizens using ID cards instead of passports. This was reported by the news agency Dunyo.

The issue was the main topic during online negotiations between the migration services of Azerbaijan and the Main Department of Migration and Citizenship Registration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan. Legal departments from both countries' Ministries of Foreign Affairs also participated.

This move is expected to simplify travel for citizens and make it more convenient. The parties believe that collaboration in migration policy will expand trade, economic, cultural, and tourist connections.

Since September 2023, an agreement between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan on mutual simplification of entry has come into effect. Citizens will be able to cross the border using ID cards and stay in the neighboring country for up to 60 days.

In a speech before the Oliy Majlis in November 2024, Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced plans to reach similar agreements with Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. Strengthening cooperation in Central Asia remains a priority for Tashkent, the president added.

Earlier, Spot reported that from July of this year, electronic versions of ID cards and other documents will be equated to paper ones in terms of legal validity.
