The Rich Gas Exporter Turkmenistan Sees "Dynamic" GDP Growth — President

The economy of Turkmenistan, the largest natural gas producer in Central Asia, grew by 6.2 percent in January-February 2023, matching last year's figures.

President Serdar Berdymukhamedov stated during a government meeting that the "independent state continues to develop dynamically."

In the reporting period, natural gas production increased by 1.6% compared to the previous year, electricity generation rose by 6.3%, and external trade turnover grew by 3.4%.

It is noteworthy that, besides Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan exports its gas to China, Russia, and Azerbaijan (via Iran), and electricity to Afghanistan, Iran, and Kyrgyzstan (transiting through Uzbekistan). Ashgabat also supplies oil products, textiles, mineral fertilizers, and food to global markets.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) expects Turkmenistan's economic growth rate to be 6.5% in 2023, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) predicts 5.8%, while the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts 2.3%.
