The development is based on topological superconductors – a unique category of materials that enable the formation of a new state of matter. This advancement has allowed Microsoft to design a quantum computer with a million qubits, significantly surpassing the capabilities of existing quantum systems.
The company notes that such computers will be able to provide "world-changing real solutions." For instance, they could propose methods for breaking down microplastics into safe components, aiding in the fight against environmental pollution, or creating self-healing materials for construction, industry, and medicine.
Microsoft is continuing its efforts to scale the technology, and if all goes according to plan, humanity could soon have truly powerful quantum computers capable of transforming entire industries.
